A SELKIE is a creature from Scottish and Irish coastal folklore - a seal in the sea who can shed its skin and become human on land. In stories, selkies often come ashore at night, dancing or walking along the beaches, their seal skins hidden among rocks or grasses. If a human steals that skin, the selkie is trapped in human form - sometimes becoming a reluctant spouse - yet the pull of the sea never leaves them, and if they recover the skin, they return to the water, often abandoning a life they briefly loved...
