Dorothy Dandridge was one of the great Hollywood starlets of the 1930s-1950s. As an actress, she made history for being the first African-American film star to be nominated for an Oscar in the title role of Carmen Jones (1951). As a singer and dancer, she regularly performed at world-renowned venues like the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater, and was also the first black woman to appear on the cover of LIFE magazine.

We pay homage to this gifted performer with an Espresso brown shantung bedecked with scarlet red flowers that measure 1" x 1.25", with a 4" repeat.

What's Christmas without a little bit of family dysfunction and chaos?? Enter our latest embroidered shantung, "Joan Crawford," a kaleidoscopic design featuring a taupe base decorated with magenta-and-white swirls that measure about 1" long. The fabric has a 4" repeat.

Joan Crawford often played the roles of hardworking young women who find romance and financial success. These rags-to-riches stories were well-received by Depression-era audiences and were especially popular with women, and consequently, she became one of Hollywood's most prominent movie stars and one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. However, her life was not without chaos and controversy, was some of her adopted children accused her, later in life, of being an abusive mother, and it was not long before their searing childhood memoir was adapted into the notorious film Mommy Dearest.
