Dorothy Dandridge was one of the great Hollywood starlets of the 1930s-1950s. As an actress, she made history for being the first African-American film star to be nominated for an Oscar in the title role of Carmen Jones (1951). As a singer and dancer, she regularly performed at world-renowned venues like the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater, and was also the first black woman to appear on the cover of LIFE magazine.
